Conclusions of the Report of AI's Mission to Guinea
Amnesty International's December 1981 mission to Guinea provided the occasion for the resumption of contact with the authorities, and a valuable exchange of views regarding government policies in the field of human rights.
Amnesty International believes that one of the most urgent and necessary actions to be taken by the Government of Guinea is a reform of its policy of secrecy with regard to all matters pertaining to political detention.
In particular, Amnesty International appeals to the Government of Guinea urgently to provide information regarding the fate of "disappeared" prisoners in Guinea, including the fate of the 78 detainees named in a list submitted to the government.
Amnesty International appeals to the authorities to introduce safeguards against the abuse of powers of detention, and to ensure that all detainees are given a prompt and fair trial. In particular, the organization hopes that the authorities will provide information regarding the judicial status of the 22 individuals named on a list submitted to the authorities, and will accede to requests for observers mandated by the organization to attend the trials of political detainees.
Amnesty International appeals to the authorities to ensure that conditions of imprisonment conform to internationally recognized standards.
