Some 2,900 political prisoners have 'disappeared' in the Popular and Revolutionary Republic of Guinea since their arrest in the 1970s. Although the government has never accounted for their fate, it is certain that rnany have been tortured, starved to death, or executed.
Specifically Amnesty International has named 78 political prisoners it believes have died in Guinean prisons, and called upon the government to account for them. Amnesty Inlernational has also called upon the Guinean government to provide information regarding the judicial statue of 22 detainees, who are among an estimated 70 to several hundred real or alleged opponents of the government who are being held in long term incommunicado detention.
Amnesty International has also appealed to the authorities to curb abuse of power of detention, especially torture, and to ensure a prompt and fair triai for all detainees.
An Amnesty International delegation visited the Popular and Revolutionary Republic of Guinea from December 16-23, 1981. The delegation, composed of Jose Zalaquett, chairman of AI's International Executive Committee, and Richard Elsner, a member ot the International Secretariat, was received on three occasions by the President ot the Republic, Ahmed Sekou Toure.
Although the government agreed at that time to provide more information on the fate of the 78 'disappeared" and 22 detainees presented to it, none has yet been supplied. There are strong grounds for believing that the 78 "disappeared" prisoners are dead. Their fate heightens concern for those now under detention.
This document presents evidence largely gathered by AI's mission, along with the list of 78 'disappeared' prisoners presented to the government during the mission. Photographs of 48 of those iidisappeared are published here. Finally, a summary of the mission report is also presented.
