The first step in trying to ensure the protection of human rights in any country is to obtain information about how people are being treated by the authorities there, taking care that the information is accurate and complete and that it is not politically biased or distorted.
The next step is to act on the information availahle by mobilizing international public opinion in defense of the victime. Most of the Guinean victime are unknown outside their own country— many are unknown outside their own village or hamlet. The persecution they have faced may be little understood by the outside world, although international publicity may well be the only trope of protection. In some cases world attention has saved rives. The single most important need, therefore, is to make people aware of what is happening.
